Beekeeping at Southport Meeting House

My name is Sue Hornby and I have been beekeeping for sixteen years. For at least ten of those years I have kept some colonies at the Friends Meeting House in Southport. The garden is a pleasant, peaceful enclosed area and at the moment I have two colonies there. The bees are gentle creatures and go pleasantly about their business. There have been one or […]

Lockdown Activities

During the Covid-19 lockdown Southport Quakers have been keeping busy in various ways. Marcia and Tony have kindly shared with us some photos of their recent (socially distanced!) adventures in Formby and Freshfield, plus a vintage piece of sheet music that has regained its relevancy in these isolating times. Meanwhile, Elizabeth took some pictures of the Meeting House front garden in bloom for everybody currently […]

Glenthorne Area Meetings Gathering 7th-9th February

Four Area Meetings were represented at the Gathering with the majority of those attending being from Hardshaw and Mann and Wirral and Chester. The theme of the Weekend was taken from Quaker Faith and Practice 21.07 “It is by our imperfections that we move towards each other, towards wholeness of relationship. It is our oddities, our grittiness, the occasions when we hurt or are hurt, […]

Children’s Meeting 02 February 2020

At February children’s meeting we were considering privilege. We listened to the Rainbow Fish story when a fish made friends by sharing his sparkly scales. We talked about what made us lucky – friends, home, family and how other people didn’t have these things. Finally we made snakes and ladders games with the lucky things as ladders and the snakes as difficulties people may face. […]

Christmas Party 2019!

On Sunday December 1st, the Southport Quakers held their annual Christmas event. We started with a half hour Meeting, followed by cups of tea and coffee all round while we were entertained by Elainer (aged 9) on the violin, playing a variety of Christmas carols. The violin is not an easy instrument to play and Eleaner played with ease and enjoyment. She also gave us […]

Arts & Crafts: October & November

On 21st October, Sheila showed us how to make little boxes from patterned paper. The method she showed us was easy to follow and the results were pleasing. The method would be adaptable in a thicker material and in different sizes. I made three boxes for my three youngest grandchildren and put a £5 note in each and a small tin of Impeachmints. See separate […]

Quaker Regional Gathering (with Teenage General Meeting)

Peace is not a fairy tale: Rediscovering our Peace Testimony in our personal and corporate lives, in an age of uncertainty, conflict and chaos. Introduced by Paul IngramConsultant, British American Security Information Council I don’t very often manage to get to Regional events, but was so glad that I did so last week. The place was Liverpool Meeting House and the theme was the Peace […]

Orthodox Church of the Holy Apostles, by Sheila Galligan

This morning I missed our usual Quaker Meeting as I’d been invited to accompany two friends, Anastasia and Dimitrios, to their Greek Orthodox Church in Leyland.  It was part of my need to be ‘open to new light from whatever source’ and was an experience not to be missed. The community, which includes lots of different nationalities, felt warm and welcoming – in other words […]
